Hello
My name is Rosie Lanyon and I am the owner and creator of Tumble & Forge, a jewellery studio in Oxfordshire.

My first steps into metal work was when I was 15 and had a go at silversmithing for my Art GCSE. I loved it but a career in the Arts would never be for me... or so I thought!
My bread and butter job is as a teacher and over the last few years I rediscovered the joy that drawing and making gave me whilst working with the children. I found a book in my local library about silver clay and realised that this was a gateway into silversmithing... so, thirty years after my first try with metalwork... here I was again but with much more self-belief. Dream big!
My Story
 Why 'Tumble & Forge'?
The inspiration for Tumble comes from the sea glass that is rolled around in the ocean for hundreds of years before I find it washed up on the shoreline. The Forge comes from the method of moving and moulding the metal into the shape I want using heat and hammers- that is what metal workers called 'forging'. When something is forged, we think that it is strong and enduring - and that is my jewellery ethos.
What materials do you work with?
I work with a range of recycled materials: sterling silver, fine silver clay, copper and brass. I combine these metals with sea glass and other gems and stones to make elegant jewellery from earrings to pendants to one-of-a-kind brooches.
Silver Clay? What is that?
Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a very clever material which can be worked into any shape you would like! Patterns can be rolled into the surface, moulds can be used to create 3D shapes and cubic zirconia can be embedded to add some sparkle. Once you have dried your clay you can fire it with a torch or heat in a kiln to create solid and beautiful pieces of jewellery - fine silver, copper or bronze.
What inspires you?
Boxes and structures, sea glass and stones! There's something special about a locket with a clever hinge or a shadow box which holds a gem that draws me in, probably due to the tactile nature of feeling the seamless silver bonded together.
Vitamin Sea
We all know there's something healing about being close to the sea; a brisk breezy walk on a wintery beach, a long laze during the summer or a romp in the waves; we all feel the benefits. Having a piece of sea glass keeps those moments close to you. Have a look at my one off and commissions page to see how your piece of glass can be made into a piece of timeless and enduring jewellery. My sea glass is all real sea glass which I have found on the beaches of Cornwall - especially the Isles of Scilly, Winchelsea Beach in Sussex - and even a small amount from Gozo, Malta.
Thank you for finding out about my journey so far. Give me a follow on Instagram (@rosie_lanyon_jewellery) to keep up with what I'm working on.
