Defying gravity

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in early April I took my husband and DD to see Wicked! at the Apollo Theatre in London. I was totally blown away by one of the most outstanding productions I've ever seen. I have no idea if every audience reacts the way we did but I was with 2327 other people (I checked the capacity of the Apollo Victoria Theatre) who absolutely loved every moment of the show. At the end, a standing O for the cast - a spontaneous, everyone up on their feet, rapturous standing ovation which was totally deserved.

But what's the link to jewellery making? Well... the story is about someone working hard to reach their potential, doing things they never thought they were capable of. It's about doing something with the odds stacked against you. Now.. I'm not going to say that I am like Elphaba. I do not have people ostracising me because I am different and I get to live a good life with a good job. BUT... what if that job isn't enough and I need another outlet for creativity? Something that has been inherited from my engineering grandfather and artist mother? That is what jewellery making is for me - problem solving and creating. Bending metal to my will (just like Magneto).

So... that link to Wicked? It's the sentiment of the song Defying Gravity... working hard to make something happen. That's me and jewellery making at the moment. Not got enough time in the day? Then get up earlier. Not sure how to do something? Look it up, figure it out, make it happen.

I think we can all learn something from Elphaba... push those limits, don't let anyone pull you back. Defy gravity.
